Farm and Garden Demonstration Schedule Announced

FREDERICK, Md. — From wreaths and flower arrangements to portable henhouses and butterfly gardening, The Great Frederick Fair Farm and Garden Department has something to interest every fair visitor to the 141st fair, "A Country Tradition in the Heart of the City," Sept. 12-20.

The Farm and Garden demonstrations will kick off in Building 14A on Sunday, Sept. 14, at 2 p.m. with a Master Gardener presentation, "Winterizing Rose."

Monday, Sept. 15 features "Making Grapevine Wreaths," presented by Barbara Morgan, from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. Sharpe’s Flowers will present "Fall Fantasies in Silk" beginning at 2 p.m. The Master Gardeners will present a series of demonstrations in their booth, beginning with "Xeriscaping" at 10 a.m. and "Butterfly Gardening" at 11 a.m. Junior Master Gardening will be at the booth at noon and a demonstration on composting will begin at 1 p.m. FFA will present demonstrations Monday through Friday from 5 p.m. - 7 p.m.

Tuesday’s demonstrations begin with a Master Gardeners presentation of "Portable Hen Houses." Kate Dennis of Green Acre Nursery will present "Rosemary and Herbs" from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m and Sharpe’s Flowers will present "Victorian Christmas" at 2 p.m.

In the Master Gardener booth, demonstrations on "Chicken Tractor" will begin at 10 a.m. and "Mosquitoes" will follow at 11 a.m. Junior Master Gardeners will demonstrate at noon and the "Mosquitoes" demonstration returns at 1 p.m.

Wednesday gets started at 11 a.m. with Sharpe’s Flowers’ "Fresh Flower Arrangements for Everyday, Novelty and Hi-Style Vases." Frederick County Extension Specialist Sandy Corridon will present "From Herb Gardener to Kitchen Gourmet" at 2 p.m. Master Gardeners will present "Horticultural Therapy" at 10 a.m., "Trough making" at 11 a.m. and "Bonsai" at 1 p.m.

Thursday’s demonstration begins at 11 a.m. with Johanna Stull present "Garden Arrangement" and Kate Dennis presenting "Lavender Herbs." "Traditional Christmas" presented by Sharpe’s Flowers will follow at 2 p.m. Master Gardeners will present "Horticultural Therapy" at 10 a.m., "Butterfly Gardening" at 11 a.m. and "Composting" at 1 p.m.

Friday’s demonstrations begin at 11 a.m. with Sharpe’s Flower’s "Harvest Arrangements," followed by a Master Gardener presentation of "Winter Bird Feeders." The Master Gardener booth will feature "Chicken Tractor" at 10 a.m., "Mosquitoes" at 11 a.m., and "Good Bugs in the Yard" at noon. The Junior Master Gardeners will round out the Master Gardeners’ demonstrations at 1 p.m.
