Birthing Center at The Great Frederick Fair

Frederick, Md.A "baby boom" will hit The Great Frederick Fair this September, and fair visitors can experience it first hand! The fair’s livestock Birthing Center, introduced at the 2003 fair, will return in 2004 as part of the national-award-winning "City Streets, Country Roads" exhibit. The 142nd Great Frederick Fair will be held September 17 -25, 2004.

The birthing center, located next to Building 32 and sponsored by MD Life Magazine,, will give the public a chance to watch farm animals give birth and care for their young. The exhibit will feature daily demonstrations of large animal veterinary practices such as livestock sonograms and embryo transfers. Bleachers will be provided for public viewing convenience.

"I think the birthing center is a great idea to educate the public," said Dr. Cindy Burnsteel, president, Western Maryland Veterinary Medical Association, who heading up the exhibit. "Frederick is growing so quickly, that many of its residents have never had the opportunity to get a taste of the farm. The birthing center gives them that opportunity. Baby animals always make a great impression."

Dr. Burnsteel and members of the veterinary association will be on hand throughout the fair to assist the animals as needed through the birthing process and answer questions from the public.

"It is amazing from last year how many people came to the Birthing Center each day, "Dr. Burnsteel said. They just sat and watch all the time, waiting for the next animal to be born!" Dr. Burnsteel said. "In addition to the farm experience, the center also exposes the public to large veterinary services which they otherwise wouldn’t see."

During the week, dairy calves, piglets and beef calves will be born at the exhibit. Fair officials are also hoping to have a lamb and goat as part of the birthing experience.

The birthing center will be open for public viewing Saturday through Saturday, Sept. 17-Saturday, Sept. 25, from 9 a.m. - 9 p.m. For more information, contact The Great Frederick Fair at 301-663-5895.
