Maryland and Virginia state and county fairs: What you need to know

Have you been to a county fair this year? Or a state fair? Although some of the fairs in Maryland and Virginia have come and gone, this is the prime season for county fairs.

The Maryland State Fair runs from August 23 to September 3. The Virginia State Fair is set for September 28 – October 7.

The biggest county fairs in Maryland and Virginia are going on now. And lots of others are still to come in late August and September.

The Montgomery County Agricultural Fair and the Prince William County Fair both opened last Friday and run through Saturday, August 18.

Many of the fairs include livestock exhibits, homemaking exhibits, carnival rides, demolition derbies, bull riding, tractor pulls, music performances, children’s activities, and pig scrambles.

And a wide assortment of food.

Montgomery County Agricultural Fair

August 10-18

501 Perry Parkway, Gaithersburg

Billed as the biggest agricultural fair in Maryland. Highlights include:

Battle of the Beast Rodeo, Monster Truck Madness, demolition derby, a large variety of commercial and craft exhibits, milking parlor and birthing center.

Kids games, animals, home arts, auctions, entertainment, and competitions.

The Maryland State Fair

August 23 – September 3

Prince George’s County Fair

September 6-9

Show Place Arena, 14900 Pennsylvania Ave., Upper Marlboro

The oldest running fair in the state! Enjoy rides or play a game and win a prize. Little ones 3 years old or younger, can be entered in the Beautiful Baby contest.

Anne Arundel County Fair

September 12-16

The Anne Arundel County Fairgrounds, 1490 General’s Highway (Route 178) in Crownsville.

Farm animals, exhibits, contests, carnival midway, entertainment, family atmosphere, agriculture education, 4-H exhibits and auction.

The Great Frederick Fair

September 14-22

Great Frederick Fair Fairgrounds, East Patrick Street, Frederick, Md.

Horse pulls, a 4-H King/Queen contest, carnival midway, potato sack races, pony racing, jousting exhibition, rides and more. Entertainment includes performances by Travis Tritt and The Charlie Daniels Band and more.

St. Mary’s County Fair
